From
http://www.ibtimes.com/what-yom-kippur-11-quick-facts-you-should-know-about-2015-jewish-day-atonement-2106694

1. Many believe one's actions from the past year are sealed after Yom Kippur. The day is a time for repentance.

2. The 10 days that precede Yom Kippur are called the Days of Repentance. It's a period of time meant for introspection.

3. Many Jews choose to follow a tradition of wearing white clothing on Yom Kippur, symbolizing purity and a Biblical promise that sins that are repented shall be made white as snow.

4. Many Jews fast a full 26 hours for Yom Kippur. Anyone who cannot safely fast -- including pregnant women and children -- are exempt.

5. Work is considered forbidden during Yom Kippur.

6. Many Jews refrain from washing or bathing, using cosmetics or deodorant, or wearing leather shoes. Sexual relations during Yom Kippur are not permitted, either.

7. Many observant Jews spend much of the holiday at the synagogue. Services include readings from the Torah.

8. Services close with the blowing of the shofar, a ritual musical instrument made of a ram’s horn.

9. Disobedience toward God requires repentance; atonement for one's wrongdoing toward other human beings often requires apologies.

10. Some religious Jews wave a chicken over their head three times while reciting prayers, and then slaughter the chicken, donating the meat or its monetary worth to the poor.

11. Many families hold a festive meal with relatives and friends to break the fast.

Denying oneself - my thought is man uses fasting as a way of denying himself. Not wrong but not commanded.

Arguments:
1. Fasting that pleases Yahweh
Isaiah 58:6-7 Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

2. Israelites were to present sin offerings on the day of atonement and sin offerings were to be eaten
a. Numbers 29:11 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering for atonement and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
b. Leviticus 6:24-29 The Lord said to Moses, "Say to Aaron and his sons: 'These are the regulations for the sin offering: The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord in the place he burnt offering is slaughtered, it is most holy. The priest who offers it shall eat it, it is to be eaten in a holy place, in the courtyard of the Tent of Meeting. Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy, and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in a holy place. The clay pot the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. Any male in a priest's family may eat it, it is most holy.

According to this Jew, sin offering is not eaten when it is offered for the priest himself or the congregation - http://www3.telus.net/public/kstam/en/tabernacle/details/offerings.htm

Lev 8:17 - seems like instead of eating, it is burned outside the camp

This is torture when they had to smell the BBQ turning into ashes.
So why would Moses get angry in Leviticus 10?

So maybe the priest is supposed to eat the sin offering for the congregation, but not for himself.

Still that means:
1. one does not eat their own sin offering
2. Aaron didn't eat the sin offering in Lev 10 because he was denying himself, and that was the day of atonement. So that kind of supports fasting on the day.

The first post suggests a good way to observe Yom Kippur "traditionally".
