Matthew 28:19-20 Empty
PostSubject: Matthew 28:19-20   Matthew 28:19-20 EmptySat Feb 25, 2017 5:23 pm

I wanted to see if Matt 28:19-20 can really be interpreted as:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son: And the Holy Ghost shall teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

I checked two manuscripts:
http://www.codexsinaiticus.org/en/manuscript.aspx?book=33&chapter=28&lid=en&side=r&verse=20&zoomSlider=0#33-28-17-6
http://www.csntm.org/manuscript/View/GA_03?filter=1
with help from https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/mat/28/1/t_conc_957019

Sure enough, the Greek text is continuous with no punctuations. It reads "...in the name of the father and the son and the holy ghost teaches them..." so the above interpretation is possible.

This is supported by:
Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

No mention of baptism in the name of the holy ghost in Acts or other books.

Acts 2:38, 8:16, 19:5 mentions baptism only in the name of Yeshua. Holy ghost was given immediately following baptism, which makes Matt 28:19-20 make total sense.

I think
a. the key here is "teaching" which I believe it has to include preaching and reading i.e. preaching the word and reading the scriptures.
b. it's possible to teach, preach and read in the absence of the Holy Spirit.
c. it would be effective to teach, preach and read in the Holy Spirit.
d. it's possible for one to receive and obey part of the teaching without the Holy Spirit for a period of time.
e. the Holy Spirit sustains.
